Unit Two: The Evolving Self
Content:
·         Developing the self (building self esteem, self image)
·         Harmony and peace with self (Resilience, mindfulness)
·         Positivity and management of emotions
Objectives:
·         To understand the concept of self esteem and self image, the contributing factors and the importance of a healthy self esteem.
·         To reflect on personal self esteem and self image.
·         To practice strategies for a healthy self esteem and self image.
·         To understand the concepts of resilience, mindfulness and emotional regulation.
·         To practice strategies to enhance resilience and emotional regulation and cultivate mindfulness.
Concept note:


The objective of the unit is to encourage exploration, reflection and integration of the concepts of self esteem, self image which provide the foundation for optimism, resilience and emotional regulation. The concept of mindfulness is introduced as a strategy to help the students develop a harmonious and peaceful relationship with the self. Kolb’s experiential learning cycle may be used as a model for designing the learning experiences.

Sub unit One: Developing the Self
(i)Self Esteem: Activity to assess one’s own self esteem. Theory input Theory of Self Esteem by Nathaniel Brandon,  Activities to enhance self esteem

(ii)Self Image: activity exploring the individual self image,  Theory input Carl Roger's Theory of Self, Activities to develop realistic and healthy self image .

Sub unit two: Harmony and Peace with Self
(i) Resilience:  Activity depicting resilience,        Theory input
Strategies to develop resilience, 
-          Film screening on resilient people followed by discussion.

(ii)Mindfulness: Concept of Mindfulness ( by Dr Jon Kabat-Zinn), use of mindfulness strategies , activities to build mindfulness

Sub unit three: Positivity and Management of emotions


(i) Analysis of one's own positivity
inputs on Learned Optimism  by Martin Seligman
strategies to develop positivity
can use films or cases depicting positive outlook in adverse situations
can administer to students the Learned Optimism Test

(ii) Emotional Regulation
Activity for understanding the need and importance of emotional regulation.
Theoretical input of Albert Ellis' Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy 
strategies for emotional regulation using the ABCDE Model
